About me
Tom Sorensen is the Regional Coordinator for WIDU.africa at GIZ, where he supports small businesses and entrepreneurship across Africa through innovative funding mechanisms and close collaboration with diaspora communities. With over 16 years of experience in the social sector and international cooperation — including 8 years with GIZ in Cameroon, Namibia, and East Africa — Tom brings a practical, field-tested understanding of development that bridges grassroots innovation and high-level policy.
Currently based in Germany and working across countries including Ghana, Togo, and Cameroon, Tom coordinates the regional programme to support the East African Community. In his role at WIDU.africa, he works to connect small businesses with funding opportunities and helps foster entrepreneurial ecosystems that can drive sustainable growth. Tom values collaboration with local actors, donors, and governments to create meaningful, lasting change in the regions he serves.
Tom is especially passionate about empowering small businesses as a catalyst for social change and economic resilience. His work with initiatives like WIDU reflects his commitment to fostering locally driven solutions that scale. He believes deeply in the power of trust, collaboration, and creative problem-solving to make development more effective and equitable.
